Whittington Estate, including Highgate Newtown Open Space (Camden)

Brief Description

This area was developed from the 1860s as Highgate New Town, largely providing working class terraced housing. The Whittington Estate was built in the 1970s as part of post WWII social housing by Camden Council. Built north of Raydon Street, and overlooking Highgate Cemetery, the estate comprises six terraces with strong horizontal lines of balconies and cornices and vertical cross walls. Between each terrace is a pedestrian walkway of a different character, with planting of trees and shrubs to soften the architecture. This landscaping together with other green spaces provided for residents is an integral part of the design.

Full Site Description

This area was developed from the 1860s and known as Highgate New Town, providing terraced housing mainly for the working classes. The name was kept when the Whittington Estate was built in the 1970s as part of post WWII social housing provision by Camden Council, which replaced some but not all of the earlier Victorian housing in the area. It was the first stage of the larger scheme initially planned from 1967 by R Gibson, but later redesigned by Paul Tabori and K Adie of Camden Architects' Department. Later stages included housing schemes in Chester Road and Dartmouth Park Hill. Built north of Raydon Street and ranged up Dartmouth Park Hill, the Whittington Estate comprises six terraces with strong horizontal lines of balconies and cornices on each level and vertical cross walls. There are similarities to the Alexandra Road Estate (q.v.), also built by Camden Architects' Department. Between each terrace is a pedestrian walkway of a different character, with an emphasis on landscape and planting to break up the concrete of the architecture. These green spaces are an integral part of the Whittington Estate and the terrace walkways have an interesting variety of trees and shrubs, some exotic and ornamental species. The estate overlooks the East Cemetery of Highgate Cemetery (q.v.).
