Loris Road Community Garden (Hammersmith & Fulham)
Brief Description
Loris Road Community Garden was created in 1983 on a WWII bombsite with funding from the GLC and LB Hammersmith & Fulham. There are 3 sections, a more formal garden in the east, a woodland nature garden on the west and a children's play area. The garden has grass, mature sycamore and other trees and shrubs. The nature garden has a rustic pergola at the entrance, with a pond and raised flower bed, some mown grass with scattered trees and shrubs. A paved area allows pedestrian access to Batoum Gardens. There are two grassed areas with shrubs, pergola and seats. An Eco-shed was constructed in the garden in 2005.

Full Site Description
Loris Road Community Garden consists of three sections; on one side is a mature garden with a grassy, hilly area and wildlife pond. A small woodland and a paved central area incorporates a mosaic and a Time Capsule, and the third part is a small children's play area next to the paved area. The garden is overlooked by a mural of The Cork and Kerry Mountains by Russell Burrell (1979) on the gable end of a house. The garden is managed by Hammersmith Community Gardens Association, which was founded in 1984 and now runs four garden projects, Godolphin Road Community Garden (q.v.), community greenhouses at Ravenscourt Park (q.v.) set up c.2004, and in 2007 a farm was established at Phoenix High School. The Association runs sessions in garden maintenance, food growing and composting, wildlife gardening and medicinal herbs for volunteers, with after-school gardening clubs, family play schemes. It also gives environmental advice to other local groups. The Eco-shed was designed by Jason Wren at Studio E Architects and built by Ecolibrium Solutions with grants from Western Riverside Environment Fund and the SEED programme of the Lottery. It provides a kitchen/office, toilet and storage and a base for the community gardener.
