The site was purchased by Camberwell Borough Council in 1905 for a sum of £2,000 and Varcoe Road Recreation Ground was opened to the public in 1906. It is protected by the London Squares and Enclosures (Preservation) Act of 1906. Now privately owned, it is a scrubby area with grass, paths and some trees.
