Full Site Description

Chingford was a rural area well into the C19th consisting of a number of small hamlets, the land largely held by the manors of Chingford St Paul's and Chingford Earls. Development was relatively slow to take place as the manorial estates were only broken up for speculative building after WWI. Cherrydown Farm, part of the Chingford Earls estate, was one of the last farms to be sold in 1926, its fields hitherto providing a peaceful setting for Chingford Old Church, All Saints (q.v.). In 1930, Chingford Urban District Council agreed to the creation of a garden on former farmland to the south of the church, at which time the dilapidated church was in the process of restoration, largely paid for by Louisa Boothby-Heathcote, last lady of the manor of Chingford Earls.
