Royal Crescent Gardens were laid out in 1846 by Robert Cantwell. Perimeter iron railings were restored in 1997 and the gardens were redesigned from 2003. A rose and herbaceous border surrounds an oak gazebo centrepiece; the garden has two magnificent plane trees which are over 175 years old, a tulip tree, and new plantings including elm, parrotia, a lagerstroemia, an Indian horse chestnut and Hungarian oak. The gardens won the Kensington Society award for garden design (2007) and first prize for North Kensington garden squares under the Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme (2008), coming second in that competition for a number of years, most recently in 2021 and 2022. It has also won accolades from the London Gardens Society.
Originally part of the Norland Estate, the square and beautiful surrounding stucco-fronted houses were built by a property developer in the early 1840s. The railings have been recently restored.

This garden is part of the Ladbroke Estate and featured in the film 'Notting Hill'. Thomas Allason's plan of 1823 allowed for generous communal gardens, organised in a concentric layout of crescents.
