The Garden

The Floating Garden is stewarded by the youth environmental education charity Global Generation. A wide beam barge, originally used as a Floating Cinema, it began life as a co-design project with a group of 16-24 year olds. They explored design inspired by nature and the atmosphere of the canal and imagined a floating classroom created using natural and recycled materials. Jan Kattein Architects took forward the design of the barge, supporting the young people and bringing together their ideas.

The garden is ever-evolving with support from local partners, volunteers and young people. The barge has gradually been refitted with planters, trellises and roof decks, all overflowing with plants. The interior and exterior continue to be transformed with growing projects, ceramic work, carpentry and mural making. Currently, the Floating Garden features four garden decks and an interior classroom, all offering beautiful views across the canal. There is also a Floating Island, a unique floating platform that provides additional waterfowl habitat and extends the green space. This space is an example of the kind of planting that can happen in tiny urban spaces, showcasing that greening is possible no matter where you are in the city!
