The Garden
The Charterhouse Gardens comprise seven acres, including Charterhouse Square and six courtyard gardens within the Tudor walls of the Charterhouse site, lying on the very edge of the City of London. The Courtyard Gardens within the ancient walls are maintained for the benefit of the Brothers, the historic term for the residents who occupy the almshouses. The gardens are important in supporting their health and wellbeing, through participating in gardening for those who are interested, enjoyment of nature and green spaces, and inspiration for art and creativity.The site is a rare Grade 2 SINC (Site of Importance for Nature Conservation) and provides an important habitat for wildlife in a highly urban environment. The gardens contain herbaceous borders, lawns and several veteran mulberry trees. They are managed as formal gardens and there are also some ‘re-wilded’ spaces of native hedges, wildflower meadows and a small pond. The garden team are committed to increasing biodiversity at the Charterhouse and to gardening in a sustainable way.

- Visit the on-site Museum, which tells the story of the Charterhouse from its foundation in 1371, at the time of the Black Death, through its roles as the most significant Carthusian monastery in England, as a home for prominent Tudor courtiers, as a boys' public school and finally as an almshouse, which it remains to this day. The Chapel will also be open and a pop-up café will be operating throughout the day selling tea, coffee and cake.
