Lincoln's Inn Gardens
The Garden
Lincoln's Inn, one of the four historic Inns of Court where barristers are trained and work, has existed since at least 1422. Its three-acre gardens are a tranquil respite from the busy nearby streets of High Holborn and Chancery Lane. Following a three-year, £26m development of the Great Hall and Library buildings, the area around the Great Hall has been transformed and now includes an exotic terrace of hardy palms and a long border which mixes formal elements with a contemporary twist. The newly planted woodland-style area is a tapestry of shade-loving plants and spring bulbs. Other garden areas include two extensive mixed shrub borders and the decorative Kitchen Garden. Significant trees include 26 heritage plane trees and three mulberries.Notable figures connected with Lincoln's Inn include Sir Thomas More, John Donne, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair. The opening of Charles Dickens's Bleak House takes place in the Old Hall, built in 1490.
