Trinity Church Square
The Garden
Trinity Church Square was built in 1824–32 on land owned by the Corporation of Trinity House. The former Holy Trinity Church is now Henry Wood Hall, used for orchestral rehearsals, and the facades of the buildings remain unchanged since the early 1800's. Such homogeneity of architecture is unusual and is due to the Square remaining the property of Trinity House.
The garden, usually open to residents only, is maintained by Trinity House. In 2021, conservation work on its iconic statue found that the lower half is Roman and possibly part of a statue of the goddess Minerva. The upper half is Coade stone and was added in the early 19th Century, to make the figure of the Anglo Saxon King Alfred.
The statue is surrounded by a circular bed planted with topiary, grasses and deciduous perennials. The Square is a mix of established and recently redesigned and replanted beds, lawns and large mature trees, including London planes.
Trinity Church Square and Merrick Square are linked by a line of London planes and a Memorial Garden dedicated to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, the longest serving Master of Trinity House.
The square is often used for filming, organised by Southwark Film Office. Films include Bridget Jones' Diary, the M&S 2024 Autumn collection advert and most recently Spielberg's Masters of the Air.
