Alec Clifton-Taylor Memorial Gardens (Kensington & Chelsea)

Brief Description

The public gardens were created on former wasteland in 1991 to commemorate Alec Clifton-Taylor, President of The Kensington Society (1978-85). The idea for the memorial arose from a friend of Clifton-Taylor requesting where he might plant a rose garden in his memory. A sundial by Mr Simmons and memorial plaque by Philip Murdin, both of the English Heritage Stone Carvers Studio, were given by the Kensington Society. The garden is adjacent to St Mary Abbots Gardens, the former churchyard of Kensington Parish Church.

Full Site Description

Of group interest with St Mary Abbots churchyard, these gardens were designed to commemorate Alec Clifton-Taylor, President of The Kensington Society from 1978 until his death in 1985 and are situated adjacent to St Mary Abbots Gardens (q.v.) The land was formerly wasteland behind the Old Town Hall, which developers agreed to give partly to the Church School and partly as open space. The idea for this being a memorial to Alec Clifton-Taylor arose from a friend of his requesting where he might plant a rose garden in his memory. The garden was completed in 1991 and has flower beds set in a paved area and some fine modern cast iron railings. A sundial by Mr Simmons and memorial plaque by Philip Murdin, both of the English Heritage Stone Carvers Studio, were given by the Kensington Society.
