Tamworth Farm Recreation Ground and Allotments (Merton)
Brief Description
The site for the park was once part of Tamworth Farm and was donated by the Tamworth Trust. Tamworth Farm Recreation Ground opened in 1926 and is still protected by the Trust. The park had a railed and hedged area of planting along the front boundary to London Road, with roses and trees, and there was a bowling green adjacent, no longer in use. New facilities have been laid out since 2004. The park is backed by allotments that are included in the site.

Full Site Description
Tamworth Recreation Ground flanks London Road, which was a toll road into London. Up until the early C20th the area remained open land surrounding Figges Marsh (q.v) with some housing constructed south of Tooting Junction station to the north of the common by 1911 (OS Surrey VII.16 25 ins Edition of 1913, surveyed 1864-6, revised 1911). By the 1930s the area was largely built up, with London Road Cemetery (q.v.) laid out and Tamworth Recreation Ground marked on the OS Map (Surrey VII.16 25 ins Edition of 1935, revised 1934).
